Service of process is the formal delivery and proof workflow for legal papers. Before a server drives to an address, the team reviews the name, last known address, phone or email, employer, deadline, and any identifiers that help distinguish the right person from someone with a similar name.

Even a small detail can help confirm that a lead belongs to the intended party. Clear intake also helps the investigator explain which facts support a likely location and which remain uncertain.

Address development means comparing available records and identifiers to identify likely current and past addresses. A current address is the practical starting point for service, but it does not guarantee service. It gives the server a better place to make documented attempts and report what happened.

When the address is wrong, skip tracing fills the gap

Skip tracing is investigative research used to develop current address or contact leads when the known address is stale, incomplete, or disputed. Field attempts turn leads into proof

After a likely address is identified, the service work begins. A server makes attempts at the service location, records the time and result, and documents what was observed. If the person is served, the return of service, meaning the proof document showing when, how, where, and by whom service was made, is prepared for the client.
